Royal Mail · UK reference help
Right code.
Right service.
Have a shop order number, a postage reference or a quiet tracking feed? First check which reference you have, which postal service was used and what the carrier actually reports.
This is an independent guide, not Royal Mail's tracking service. No number is entered, sent or stored here. Check the official service directly for carrier status.
Use the shipment code, not the order number.
Read the original dispatch confirmation, postage receipt or label. Look for the carrier's shipment reference rather than assuming the retailer's order number is trackable. If the field is unclear, ask the sender for the exact reference and service name.
Keep each parcel separate. Do not guess missing characters or paste an address, a whole message or a payment link into a tracking field. Our private format checker can inspect simple copied text, but cannot identify a carrier, validate Royal Mail's format or prove that a parcel exists.
For a visual explanation of the difference, read tracking number versus order number.
Not every service shows the whole journey.
Ask the sender which postal service they bought. A reference alone does not tell you which scans to expect.
On a small screen, scroll the comparison across to read both columns.
| What you have | What to check |
|---|---|
| A tracked service | Royal Mail identifies Tracked and Special Delivery Guaranteed among its trackable services. Check the current carrier history for the particular item. |
| Royal Mail Signed For | Signed For does not provide tracking throughout the journey. Royal Mail describes a delivery confirmation with a signature after delivery. |
| A delivery-confirmation number | Click & Drop guidance says this type of number appears in Track & Trace after a destination scan. An empty earlier history is not, by itself, proof of loss. |
These are service distinctions, not universal scan schedules or delivery promises. Service terms can change. Confirm the actual service with the sender and consult Royal Mail's current information.
Read what the carrier says now.
- Open the carrier yourself. Use Royal Mail Track Delivery, then enter the confirmed reference there. We do not prefill a reference or transmit delivery information.
- Note the message and its time. A scan time, a dispatch email and the time an app refreshed are different pieces of information. Preserve the carrier's actual wording for a private enquiry.
- Match the expectation to the service. A missing progress scan does not necessarily mean the reference is wrong, the parcel is lost or an app is broken. Refer to the service distinction above.
- Choose the appropriate enquiry. Ask the sender to confirm the reference and service if information is missing. Use the carrier's own support options for current delivery or collection arrangements.
If a label exists without movement, use the label-created checklist. If the feed went quiet, use tracking not updating. For an attempted delivery, read our missed-delivery guide.
A useful private enquiry
Send this through the retailer's normal support channel, adapting the placeholders yourself. Do not publish a tracking reference, address or unredacted label on social media.
Could you confirm the postal service and shipment reference for my order? I checked the carrier at [date and time] and saw [the actual message]. Is this a journey-tracking service or delivery confirmation only, and what should I do next?
This text is a suggested enquiry, not a claim form or a promise of compensation.
